Russian hockey player Alex Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, has become the eighth player in the history of the North American National Hockey League (NHL) to score 700 goals.
Ovechkin, 34, scored the goal on February 22 in the third period of a match against the New Jersey Devils in Newark, New Jersey.
He had not scored in five straight games after notching his 699th goal against Montreal on February 17.
Ovechkin was born in Moscow in 1985 and began his career with Dynamo Moscow at the age of 16. The Capitals selected him first overall in the 2004 NHL draft and made his NHL debut in October 2005.
He played for the Russian national team in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Canadian Wayne Gretzky leads the NHL scoring list with 894 career goals.
