Wall Street gains more ground

U.S. stocks were modestly higher Wednesday.

At the close of trading the Dow Jones Industrials were up 172.60 points or 2.05% at 8,591.69.

The Nasdaq Composite was up 42.58 points or 2.94% at 1,492.38.

The Standard and Poor's 500 was up 21.93 points or 2.58% at 870.74.

The U.S. dollar and Japanese yen gained ground. Around the New York close the euro was quoted at 1.2700. The British pound slumped to 1.4728, and the Swiss franc to 1.2118.

The Canadian dollar weakened to 1.2579, while the Australian dollar was fetching .6505. The Japanese yen rose to 92.84.
